Alternative wind turbines

"It's a vision of a magnetically levitated wind turbine that can generate one gigawatt of power (enough to power 750,000 homes). This is the device proposed by a new Arizona-based company, MagLev Wind Turbine Technologies. The company claims that it can deliver clean power for less than one cent per kilowatt hour using this wind turbin

Magnetic levitation is a very efficient method of capturing wind energy. The blades of the turbine are suspended on a cushion of air, and the energy is directed to linear generators with minimal fiction losses. But the big advantage with maglev is that it reduces maintenance costs, and increases the lifespan of the generator." - http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/07/colossal_magnet.p

"Wind is a form of solar energy. The rotation of the earth, differences in the earth’s surface and unequal heating of the atmosphere by the sun, cause winds to blow. The earth’s terrain, vegetation and bodies of water change patterns of wind flow. People through the ages have used wind flow or kinetic energy for many useful purposes such as flying kites, powering windmills, sailing, and even generating electricity.

Wind power and wind energy are two terms, which describe how wind can generate mechanical power or electricity. A wind turbine changes the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical power. This mechanical power can accomplish specific tasks like pumping water or grinding grain. This mechanical energy can also be converted into electricity." - http://www.dasolar.com/wind-power/wind-turbines
